Saipan 1944

AN EXAMPLE OF AN AMPHIBIOUS LANDING OPERATION IN SCALE 1:1250

A further LCI ( left ) and a LCS -
(Landing Craft Support), for direct fire support ( middle ) are approaching
the shallow water of the reef ...

...while some LVT´s have just crossed the edge of the coral reef.
The impacts are from Japanese mortar positions beyond the beach.

The Landing Craft Personal-LCP´s und LCM´s of the first wave are approaching to the beach now ...

..those minutes and seconds of uncertainty
about the real strength of the enemy -
and all what ever will follow ....

But there was also air support from the aircraft carriers far out on the sea ..

In this case, here are Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless of squadron VB - 16 from the carrier USS Lexington. This old and long-served type of dive bombers are here on their last operational missions from carrier decks with the attack of Japanese positions on Saipan.

~ By the way ~ This model is in scale 1 : 350 !

The bottom of the lagoon is from the same plaster,
while the water is made by coloured synthetic resin.

The side length of the beach diorama is 34 cm !
The displayed models are mainly from the Producer Neptun ,
